Well you know how the story ends so there are no real spoilers. I will say that I found about thirty minutes of excellent film in a three hour experience. The best material starts when the test bomb explodes. There’s remarkably little about social, intellectual, or scientific excitement in Los Alamos — a Netflix serial episode would have done a better job with that. The dialogue is jerky and poor throughout. Above all, the film spends about two hours fleshing out McCarthyite themes in a way that I found very repetitive and short-sighted. I saw what – five ?? – movies that do the same thing. Even Woody Allen did a better job of this in his The front. The different male-female relationships all seem so rushed. There was too much music.
So I’m giving this one a thumbs up. I like that it forces the viewer to think more about nuclear weapons, and I’m sure a lot of people will learn a bit about the story. The movie certainly has its uses, but overall I enjoyed it mission impossible 7 more.
