Bill Belichick must have forgotten that he is not the only footballing luminary to have been the head coach of Mac Jones. Jones played college football for Nick Saban – arguably Belichick’s top student. Remember, “One band, one sound” from the movie Drumline? This line is Alabama football. Each person painstakingly rehearses a role so that when the whole team gets together on Saturday, they all play and move as one unit.
Jones worked in this type of environment for four years, so in a new, he will notice disorganization – a word that aptly describes 2022 patriots‘ offence. Longtime offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels left to be head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. To replace him, Belichick left Joe Judge and Matt Patricia lead the attack. Neither had experience as an offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach. Jones was so frustrated during the 2022 season that he contacted his college’s offensive coordinator, Steve Sarkisian, for help.
The decision infuriated Belichick, and NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran reports that Belichick is still very upset. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that Belichick took a bend over Jones trade.
“The disloyalty in Bill’s mind is almost worse than the bad game,” Curran said last week on WEEI’s Jones and Mego show.
That’s rich coming from Mr. “On to Cincinnati.” Yes, Jones exiting the team for help, especially for a college coach, could be seen as showing the current Patriots coaching staff. However, if Jones did it, he did it for a reason. Something was wrong with the quarterback room in New England and went elsewhere for better answers. His goal was to become a better football player, so he returned to his old home where he experienced a bigger structure than his current one.
If Belichick is really all about the work. If steadily improving every day is his philosophy of life, then Jones is pulling out all the stops to try and salvage a season in which his performance was regressing at a rapid pace should have been commended. Instead, it seems that the barely moving face is a mask that hides the ego that has been reported In recent years.
Jones comes from the best structure in college football. This organization was headed by someone Belichick knows personally. Because of that background, even though Jones is young, he noticed he wasn’t getting the answers he needed from the Patriots.
This pissed off Belichick probably because he pointed out early on the mistake he made in giving two of his friends undeserved jobs. A mistake he was forced to correct by firing Judge and hiring Alabama’s Bill O’Brien to be his offensive coordinator.
That’s what happens when people think the band is all about its own drum. Anyone who challenges people to act in this way is considered a traitor instead of someone trying to improve the group.
Belichick wouldn’t want a player who has never been challenged and coached by yes-men his entire life. However, in the last years of his coaching career, he seems more concerned with preserving his authority than what’s best for his team.
One band, one Bill sound. If you lose that, you will continue to lose to Cincinnati and others.
