Readers have sometimes been kind enough to ask in the comments where I’m at on my plans to move overseas, since I’ve shared too much about the estate settlement process and where I’m going next. Although Mountain Brook has a lot to recommend it, suburban living is not for me.
The house here will be open to buyers from Friday. A house down the street (similar vintage and size) contracted in nine days and closed a month later. My attorney told me yesterday that a client of his listed a house on a Thursday, received two offers on Sunday, and closed three weeks after that. I’m looking for a slightly less hectic pace and I think Memorial Day and the 4th of July holiday will help with that.
I am moving to Thailand, which seemed to me the most suited to my complex criteria. I’m not sure this will help me understand my logic, as I doubt my needs and the way I ranked them would line up with anyone else’s list. That said, other countries that show promise for expats include Costa Rica, Portugal, Mexico, Uruguay, and Cyprus. Malaysia also scored high, but a drastic change in visa rules put an end to that idea.
While I’m excited about my next big move, please don’t engage in casual discussion about Thailand in the comments. While I appreciate the interest, it’s actually a negative conversation starter. Thailand has strict defamation laws, where truth is no defense, so something as routine here as a negative review on a travel site can land you in the crosshairs of litigation. And if you look at the site’s history, Thailand is almost entirely outside of our hearts.
So wish me luck on my takeoff!
